GEO Generative Engine Optimization
Improving visibility within responses produced by generative engines.
When to use it: The strongest broad industry term — use for visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and similar systems.
Where the term comes from
GEO originated in a 2023 research paper by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi (arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735), which defined it as improving a site's visibility within responses produced by generative engines and benchmarked which content strategies — adding citations, quotations, statistics — actually moved that visibility.
Use GEO when talking about ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot, and Claude with web search.
How it differs from SEO and AEO
Classic SEO earns a ranked position; GEO earns presence inside a generated answer — being retrieved, quoted, and cited by the engine that writes the response. AEO is the slightly broader, older cousin: it also covers featured snippets, voice assistants and People Also Ask. GEO is tied specifically to generative AI engines.
Google's own position, worth keeping in view: conventional SEO remains foundational, and Google states there are no special technical requirements unique to appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It refers to terms like AEO and GEO as emerging industry terminology rather than replacements for SEO (developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features).
What actually moves GEO
The research and industry practice converge on: quotable, well-bounded passages; citations, statistics and named sources in the content; clear entity identity (who is saying this); machine-readable structure; and crawl access for AI bots. Our AIO score's ten categories measure exactly these levers — grade your site to see where you stand.
